One of the most famous athletes in NDSD's long athletic history, Rolf set state records in track at the 1922 State Meet in the 100, 220 and low hurldes. His time of 10.2 in the 100-yard dash stood for at least fifteen years. Only a 3-event limitation prevented Rolf from winning the state meet singlehandedly as he was given a courtesy leap in the long jump and easily beat the winning distance. In a battle with Grand Forks and Fargo for the title, his three firsts gave NDSD 15 of its final 24 points. Grand Forks and Fargo were tied for the title with 25.
A year later at Gallaudet College, Rolf set a 100-yard record of 9.8 seconds which stood up to the 1960s. He was inducted into the American Athletic Association of the Deaf Hall of Fame in 1968.
