
Steve Blehm, one of the State’s most widely known athletes in the early 1970s, is most famous for his basketball feats. He set the state record of 85 points scored in a single game and one of the highest four-year point totals ever scored in the USA. He was a member of the 1973 mile relay track team which placed second at the State Meet and holds the school record of 3:32.5. In football he was a standout end with sure hands. The first NDSD athlete to win All-State hnors: First team in 1973, second team in 1972 and honorable mention in 1971. Other honors: American Athletic Association of the Deaf Athlete of the Year (1972); David Peikoff Scholar-Athlete (1972); Gallaudet College Athlete of the Month (1976); Most Valuable Basketball Player, 1975-1976 and 1976-1977; Most Valuable Player at Gallaudet (1976); George Allen Scholarship for Athlete-Scholar (1976); member of World Games of the Deaf Basketball Team, a gold medal winner (1977); Block-G Athlete of the Year (1978); and GCAA Athlete Award (1978).
